TRAVEL

DOING AMERICA WITH

BOB DAMRON

CINCINNATI, OHIOThe "Queen City" is full of surprises! The first one, if you fly into Greater Cincinnati Airport, is the large sign that greets you drive out, stating that you are "Welcome to Kentucky." And here you thought you were in Ohio? Not yet! The airport is actually in KY, as it's called, about a twenty minute ride from Cincycenter. After driving

through the sloping green hills of Kentucky, you suddenly stream down past the "cut in the hill," and there before you is one of the bridges spanning the Ohio River. Just across the 'Blue Ohio' is Riverfront Stadium and Cincinnati's imposing skyline.

It's population is only. about 400,000 but Greater Cincinnati encompassing the downtown area, surrounding suburbs and Northern Kentucky, is well over a million. The

city was settled in 1788, and has the fifth oldest Symphony Orchestra in America, as well as Ballet and Opera Companies. The best of Broadway onthe-road shows can be

seen at the Taft Theatre... and sports fans idolize the Bengals and Reds who play at Riverfront Stadium., Annual events include the May Festival, river cruises on. the Sternwheelers Delta Queen or Mississippi Queen, and horseracing at River Downs or Latonia.

If you are visiting 'Cincy' for the first time, you should see Clifton, an academic neighborhood surrounding the huge University of Cincinnati, with a student body of 40,000, and rejuvenated Mt. Adams, with it's chic, Bohemian shops, boutiques and cafes. Ohio's tallest building, the Carew Tower, Art Museum, Krohn Con-

servatory, Union Terminal, William Howard Taft Birthplace National Historical Site, Zoo, and cruisy Mount Airy Forest, are also of interest. If the child in you is trying to escape, ride 'The Beast' at King's Island Amusement Park... said to be the largest and fastest roller coaster in the world.

Cincinnati has always been one of my favorite 'bar towns. For years The Badlands at 419 Plum St. has exemplified the best, offering various areas for conversation, cruising or disco dancing. Now it has some serious competition, with the prospect of more to come. Spurs is a 'hot' new macho and leather
